Update Chapters
Added by Anonymous, last edited by Matt Raible on Mar 09, 2005

The SourceBeat model is there are monthly updates to each book. In some cases, these updates might pertain to existing chapters. However, they can also be represented by new chapters. Below is a list of ideas for "update chapters" I plan to write for Spring Live in 2005. If you would like to see the order/number of the chapters changed, please leave a comment.

  • March: work on updates (there's some in JIRA), release Chapter 12
  • April: start Chapter 13, maybe on remoting and web services, release updates from March
  • May: updates for Spring 1.2, Chapter 13 editing
  • June: start Chapter 14 (JMS or JMX), release Chapter 13 and updates
  • July: updates to existing chapters, Chapter 14 editing
  • August: start Chapter 15 (topic TBD), release Chapter 14 and updates
  • September: updates to existing chapter, Chapter 15 editing
  • October: release Chapter 15 and edits

Ideas for other chapters

Below are a few ideas for other update chapters.

#1: Automated and Performance Testing

Chapter 8 was a lot longer than I originally planned, so I snipped a couple of sections out: Automated Testing and Performance Testing. Add these sections to Chapter 8, or create a whole new chapter might be a good idea. Here's the outline:

Automated Testing

Performance Testing

  • JUnitPerf
  • JMeter
  • Microsoft's Web Application Tester
  • Grinder? (documentation only exists in a book)

Testing Updates

#2: Advanced Forms

Chapter 5 is called "Advanced MVC", but there's a lot more howtos information that could be provided on Spring MVC. Inspired by this bug. Possible topics:

  • Using non-String fields: Integers, Doubles, Dates
  • Indexed Properties and Nested Objects
  • Checkboxes
  • Drop-downs
  • Form Simplification Macros - for Velocity and FreeMarker and JSP 2.0
  • Two forms on one page (hint: use one command object w/ two nested objects)
  • Include howto for using AbstractWizardFormController.
Other Ideas
  • JMX, JMS, Quartz/Scheduling, Remoting, Spring RCP (see Desktop Java Live), JDK 5.0 and Spring. Do you have others? If so, please add them.
  • Spring IDE - When it gets to be bit more robust
